The Crunch Test

The goal with Oregon cob is to build a wall of sand grains mortared together with clay. Sand grains should be touching one another, so that the mix can’t shrink much as it dries. One very simple way to determine this is what we call the crunch test. Take a small handful of each mixture. Hold it up to your ear. Squeeze and listen. If the mix has enough sand, you will hear the sharp grating sound of sand grains rubbing against each other—Crunch! CRUNCH!—like scraping sandpaper. There is usually a marked difference in sound between mixes with enough sand and those without. Try many different samples; get used to the sound of a good building mix.
